The reason as I see it is, there isn't an easy villain.

There's an *obvious* villain—the American God, capitalism, but many are psychologically unwilling to see the American God as the bad guy, thus, many are psychologically unsure of how to think of its victims.
What do you do when your god kills people?

If you worship that god, you start to make a story.

The subject of the story is how those people deserved to die.

A very common story—in the halls of power, the most common story there is.
Yes, and how do you memorialize people that your god killed, if they deserved to die?

That's not what they're saying yet. But that psychological implication is everywhere, everywhere.
