Not the first time I’ve heard this theory, but good to see it getting some serious debate among Labour members.
I will pay one thousand of your English pounds to the drunk QC for this proof.
While I’m more than happy to let this “Keir Starmer is the Secret Barrister” rumour fly, it would, if true, mean that Keir Starmer not only spent a night live-tweeting Legally Blonde for clicks, but was also blocked by Peter Hitchens for sending him a photo of some nachos:

Gutter journalism. #FakeLaw.

1. This man was not “handed” £2.5m. This is a lie. That was the overall cost of legal aid in long-running serious criminal proceedings. This is like saying someone who receives a NHS heart transplant is “given” the cost of the operation.
2. Readers are invited to conclude that £2.5m is too much to spend on this case. The journalist has not bothered to tell you any of the context that you would need to even *begin* to assess whether that cost is too high, too low, or about right. Such as...
3. How much of that figure includes VAT, which goes to the Treasury? How many lawyers & support staff worked on the case? What work was involved? How many hours, days, months went into this extremely serious case where the defendant was looking at a potential life sentence?

There has been criticism of legal commentators who have warned of the dangers of some police forces misunderstanding and misusing the Covid-19 Regulations.

This is why it matters. If the law is not applied correctly, people can end up prosecuted for offences that don't exist.
The problem is particularly acute in the magistrates' courts, where legal aid is not available for many people, and where magistrates are not legally trained. The scope for rogue prosecutions to slip through the net is all too real.
None of this is intended as a criticism of police officers doing an already-impossible job in even more impossible conditions. They are heroes and deserve every bit of acclaim rightly afforded to NHS workers. But without clear training, mistakes will happen.

There is nothing in the legislation that prohibits multiple people from the same household going to the shops. Nor is there a bar on going out to buy “non-essential items”.

Such things may not be desirable, but they are not crimes.

This does the police no credit.
For information, Regulation 6 is here.
Furthermore, by choosing to summons (i.e. prosecute) rather than issue a fixed penalty notice, the police are contributing to an already unsustainable logjam in the criminal courts.

It may just be that the tweet is poorly worded and there is more to it. But it doesn’t look good.
