Last week, the Wisconsin primary showed us the GOP playbook for November as Republicans took their voter suppression scheme to the next level. Here’s a thread on #COVIDー19, election safety & security, & what you can do NOW to protect our democracy before Nov.
Monday night, the conservatives on the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling that disenfranchised thousands of voters. slate.com/news-and-polit…
The court halted Wisconsin’s plan to extend absentee voting before Tuesday’s primary, resulting in thousands of late absentee ballots being thrown away. Voters who requested ballots weeks or even months ago didn’t receive their ballots due to delays. Now their votes won’t count.
Meanwhile, thousands of poll workers across WI, understandably, declined to work on Tues. in fear for their health, & hundreds of polling stations closed, leaving folks to decide btwn risking their health or not voting in a pivotal election. The result: long lines & long waits.
The GOP’s voter suppression efforts have ramifications far beyond the primary election in WI -- they’ll impact participation in the Nov. presidential election, too. Changing election dates, fewer polling stations, & long lines disproportionately affect people of color.
Here’s what’s at stake: without substantial funding & policies in place to protect our election, millions of voters, especially in brown & Black communities, will lose their chance to vote. The GOP doesn’t want to expand vote-by-mail to all states because it means they’ll lose.
On Tuesday, @ewarren released a plan that builds on @RonWyden & @amyklobuchar’s bill, & includes some non-negotiable policies like expanding early in-person voting days & no-excuse absentee vote-by-mail, banning oppressive requirements & voter roll purges, & more.
YET -- On Wednesday, Democrats released their latest #COVIDー19 bill, and it doesn’t remedy the flaws in the last package. The last bill was a $2 trillion free-for-all for corporations and elites, and this bill doesn’t even pretend to strengthen oversight over the bailout money.
Even worse -- despite all the chaos we witnessed in WI Tuesday, the new bill doesn’t include any additional 💰 for election reforms or vote-by-mail -- we need at least another $2 billion in funding to states to implement these reforms.
In short, the Dems' new bill is not enough and we have to push for more. That’s why we’re asking you to call your members of Congress -- including Democrats -- and demand that they fight to include these emergency protections in the next #COVIDー19 bill. indivisible.org/demand-your-se…
We also have a few other asks:

✔️Record a video to demand your senators include Elizabeth Warren’s protection plan in the next bill.

✔️Email your member of Congress and ask that they prioritize a people-first stimulus bill that puts people over profits.

✔️Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper and explain to your neighbors and Congress why they should support a people’s bailout in response to COVID-19.

✔️Share our election security resources far and wide.

✔️And finally, if you’re able, donate to Indivisible Project to help us keep producing resources, supporting advocacy, & providing tools & support you need to push forward an agenda that prioritizes people over profits.

Do these things on 🔁and we’ll keep you posted with more updates and actions. We need to make sure that every eligible vote is counted in November.
