No conversation about this pandemic is complete without mentioning that the Right’s assault on education and continual undermining of science and experts, all done to enable control and help corporations stave off public unrest, created a perfect environment for mass tragedy.
The Right’s distrust of science and education didn’t happen by accident. It was systematic and intentional. Now, faced with a scientific problem and in need of expertise, large swathes of the nation have been taught to distrust and despise both.
The coronavirus pandemic is an amalgam of all of America’s problems. Its corrupted political system. Its top-down, profit-over-people economy. Its decaying infrastructure and by-design obsolete and cruel healthcare system. Our embattled, undermined educational system. All of it.
Just simply reporting the confirmed cases, deaths from covid-19, and the Trump Administration’s intentional apathy doesn’t actually cover the story. It took decades and decades of political malfeasance and organized destruction to get us here.
