Here's my five-step guide to appearing on TV programmes via Skype or Facetime. We are seeing some very weird shots at the moment, so ...
1. Put the sun BEHIND the camera. I am currently watching a cabinet minister who is sitting in front of a window. Her iPad is having a nervous breakdown, focusing on her net curtain instead of her face. Smartphones can't help it — they always search for light.
2. So light your face! A ring light is a great investment.

3. Your device needs to be supported, not held. And the screen needs to be the same level and angle as your face, otherwise you get the classic up-the-nose shot. Avoid it by looking online for a "gooseneck phone holder." These are SO useful.
4. Dress the set. Viewers spend 3 seconds looking at your face, then they scour the background for something more interesting. The background gives clues to who you are! Bookcases are good but not too close. A good background has depth. NEVER sit with your back against a wall.
5. Use an earphone with built-in mic. Okay, some people don't like to. But if you have the presenter's voice coming into your ear — instead of out of a speaker — you'll be able to interact much better. Otherwise, when you speak, you cut the sound from the studio.
6. Oh, and ... avoid this.
