Excellent article by David Feldman. The key problem is not a specific group of people ("Anti-Semites"), to which one does or does not belong, but "Anti-Semitism": a reservoir of ideas, tropes & prejudices on which political debate often unthinkingly draws. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Fighting over whether a particular individual "is" or "is not" "an Anti-Semite" tends to stifle a more important argument: why do anti-Semitic ideas circulate so widely in British politics? And why has Labour proven so vulnerable to this particular form of racism? Feldman writes:
As Feldman writes, "education, even more than discipline, must be a priority for Labour". Activists need a better understanding of anti-Semitism, so that legitimate critiques of capitalism or foreign policy do not open a gateway for anti-Semitic tropes about Jewish wealth & power
Momentum made a welcome start last year, but there's more to be done. In particular, Labour needs to help its members to talk about Israel in ways that do not invoke anti-Semitic conspiracies about Jewish power (consciously or not). I wrote about this here gladstonediaries.blogspot.com/2019/03/moment…
