For much of human history, we lived in the age of Empires, where citizenship was not tied to ethnicity

St Augustine was a Roman, yet a North African

21st cen is actually the age of "ethno-nationalisms" and nation-states. An age that started post Westphalia
So when people talk up 21st century as some golden age of "cosmopolitanism" and weakened sense of ethnic identity, they have no clue

The Roman Empire was a lot more cosmopolitan than Europe today
Back in 50 CE, you could be a gentile in Rome or in Jerusalem, and yet feel a strong sense of belonging to a common classical civilization

It didn't matter what your ethnicity was.
