Why is 420 called #marijuanaday? Image
Coming up: A thread on the many references in pop culture to #420culture.

*Children, please look away*

#420day
Starting from 1978:
The song 'Khaike Paan Banaras Wala' from Don starts with @SrBachchan drinking "Shivji ka prasad".

*giggle*

In fact, the song begins with "bhang ka rang jama ho chakachak phir lo paan chabaaye..."

1992: Tarantino wrote the script for Pulp Fiction in Amsterdam(!). His fondness for marijuana is failry well known (lexichronic.com/brad-pitt-quen… ).

In fact, there was a rumor for a long time that in Pulp Fiction all the clocks point to the time 4:20. Image
2003:
Boom the absolutely mental but unpopular movie is actually named after a common #420culture practice - 'Boom Shiva'.

Before a bank robbery, Katrina Kaif, Padma Lakshmi and Madhu Sapre smoke up and do the Boom Shiva routine, and that’s why the movie was called Boom. Image
2004:

The movie with the greatest ever tagline: “Charas: A JOINT Effort” Image
2007:
@Kailashkher’s song Bam Lahiri makes no effort to conceal what the song is about: Parvati's love for Shiva, and what she is willing to do for him.

Including "Din bhar teri mein bhang ragdoongi. Bhang ragdoon, tera ragdoon dhatura"

2013:
Naseeruddin Shah starred in a documentary about legalizing cannabis!

2013:

Go Goa Gone's opening scene features Kunal Khemu and @thevirdas smoking up and watching the infamous Goli Maar song of Chiranjeevi.

(for more on this, you can also check out the first episode of IWTK).

The other obvious reference in the movie :
Babaji ki booty:
"Jo bhari chilam bane hum hero
Life lage film, samasya zero"

2013:
In @prateikbabbar's Issaq, there is a clever take on the “Smoking is injurious to health” disclaimer usually seen in Indian films. When a person is seen smoking pot in the background, the disclaimer says “Character is smoking herbs, not tobacco". Image
Another great song about smoking pot.

Oopar oopar renne de by Tanishk-Vayu
"ghaas phoos pe loat raha hoon
roll roll kar jalna."
2016:
The Blueberry Hunt is a little known movie, starring Naseeruddin Shah (!) and set in the beautiful state of Kerala.

Shah plays a retired Colonel, who runs a marijuana plantation of a variant called 'Blueberry Skunk'. Image
In "Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana", the movie revolves around this famous "chicken khurana" dish which has this one secret ingredient, that made the Khurana dhaba famous across Punjab.

Spoiler alert: the secret sauce turns out to be marijuana. Image
2020-4-20

The 1992 Dr.Dre album "Chronic" was released today on streaming services, as a reference to the date 4/20.

In fact, the album cover is a tribute to the rolling paper brand Zig-Zag's iconic packaging, and the name "Chronic" refers to a slang for high-grade cannabis. ImageImage

"Except for cricketers, poets, and singers, others found it relatively hard to come to India."

This was director John Mathew Matthan's rationale for portraying a ghazal singer as the villain!

25 years ago, crime drama changed forever with the release of Sarfarosh!

A Thread 🧵 Image
John Matthew Matthan was an ad-film director, and "Sarfarosh" was his debut. But, he was an assistant to Govind Nihalani in Nihalani's first film "Aakrosh" and in "Gandhi," where Nihalani was the cinematographer!

He met Naseeruddin Shah on the sets of Aakrosh! Image
Aamir Khan's rationale to work with a debutant was as follows:

"When I read the script, I realized the social implications of what the film was trying to say (...) I reacted emotionally to it because of what I had been going through as an Indian, it talked of Hindus & Muslims living together."Image

Hindi film fandom is divided into two types: those who love Andaz Apna Apna and those who just don't get the love that this film garners.

A thread (🧵) on the iconic film that is often incorrectly thought of as Shashi Tharoor's cinema debut!Image
Andaz Apna Apna's success is often attributed to its video release and repeat telecasts on TV (Zee Cinema, who remembers!).

@diptakirti notes that while the movie did have a good opening, it did not deliver what is typically expected of a multi-starrer. Image
In the film, legendary comedian Mehmood played the movie maker who lures Salman Khan into cinema.

Medhmood's Wah Wah productions is a reference to his role in Pyaar Kiye Ja from the 1960s.

In Pyaar Kiye Ja he wants to make films under the Wah Wah Productions banner.

India's greatest cartoonist RK Laxman had a lot to say about Indian elections and politics.

A thread! 🧵

Rising gas cylinder prices:

"I gathered them from the street! The way they are increasing its price we can't afford gas any more." Image
Hope:

"He wants a hope-oriented speech for 15th August, boosting people's morale, praising our achievements and progress." Image
"There he is! He comes regularly every year to lay the foundation stones for new projects: hydro-electric, housing, industrial complex, etc ... !" Image

Babasaheb Ambedkar is one of the greatest thinkers ever!

The architect of the Indian Constitution was undeniably a GENIUS!

A thread 🧵celebrating this icon who said "Cultivation of the mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence" Image
As a member in the viceroy’s council from 1942 to 1946, Dr Ambedkar was instrumental in bringing about several labour reforms.

He changed working hours from 12 to 8 in 1942.

He also introduced DA, medical leaves & periodic revision of pay.

📸@roundtableind Image
Babasaheb studied for two PhDs in his career in addition to his qualification as a lawyer 🤯

His PhD dissertation in Economics at @LSEnews was titled ‘The Indian Rupee’. A few years ago, @stefeich unearthed a first edition of this work with Ambedkar’s original dedication!

Anil Kumble is one of India's greatest match winners. Today we talk about a a little known story of how a very much vegetarian Kumble ate 2 bears 🐻🐻

Setting the stage - 1995, hot and dry summer in the county championships in England. Kumble is playing for Northamptonshire. A Thread🧵Image
They were second in the table going to take on the first placed team Warwickshire. Warwickshire, though without Brian Lara, were defending champions and were leading the table at that time.

Few years later, Kumble would dismiss Lara looking like this. Image
Allan Lamb won the toss for Northamptonshire and decided to bat first. They were skittled out for 152 with only David Capel managing to get to a half century.

David Capel then proceeded to take a 7fer to restrict Warwickshire to 224. Remarkably 140 of them came from Roger Twose. Image

Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) was incorporated in 1953 by the Government of India as a machine tool manufacturing company.

A watch division came up in Bengaluru in 1961. A guest thread 🧵about HMT by @nandyellidli Image
If you suffer from #CollectibleLust, the first HMT hand-wound mechanical watch is likely the most coveted treasure among mechanical watch collectors.

Believe me, India boasts a thriving community of enthusiasts! Image
It is said that Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, now blamed for all the problems that ail our country, dedicated the first batch of hand-wound watches to the people of India - & this the “Janata” line of watches was born!

Maybe true, maybe false…but makes for one heck of a story!
