Trump: US is “king of ventilators”

Data:

After NY forced to dangerously split ventilators between patients, US awarded top-five ventilator contractors $2.3B. Four ($1.9B) have a foreign parent/owner in these countries: 🇳🇱🇨🇭🇬🇧🇯🇵

Let's go through the contracts:

You can browse the largest awards yourselves on the USASpending database, where the top one for ventilators, at +$646 million, went to Philips North America on April 8.

That's a subsidiary of Dutch giant Royal Philips.

Here is Royal Philips' press release touting the contract.

Some of the other top contracts went to:

Hamilton Medical: +$551M (Swiss 🇨🇭)
Vyaire Medical: +$407M (owned by British private equity firm Apax Partners 🇬🇧)
Zoll Medical: +$350M (part of Japan’s Asahi Kasei Group🇯🇵)
Of the top five contractors for pandemic-response ventilators, the only one with a U.S. parent or owner is Datex Ohmeda, a subsidiary of General Electric. 🇺🇸

The database shows two big contracts this month: $336M and ~$64.1M.
"America First" nationalist rhetoric aside, the dates of these contracts are just as significant.

They fall well after reports coming out of New York about ventilator-splitting, which six medical groups called a dangerous practice.

That's just when these contracts *started.*
"Attempting to ventilate multiple patients with COVID‐19, given the issues described here, could lead to poor outcomes and high mortality rates for all patients cohorted."

- Joint statement from these six groups apsf.org/news-updates/j…
Then there is the question of whether the contracts will deliver.

On March 30, a ProPublica investigation highlighted a Philips subsidiary's record using millions in taxpayer money five years ago for ventilators that the company then sold abroad. propublica.org/article/taxpay…
A little more than a week after that report, a Philips subsidiary won the biggest contract for ventilators to date: ~$646.6M on April 8.
