The history of exclusion in the UK is fascinating, horrific and scarcely known to most people. I mention a few examples of the outrageous theft of our rights, some of which continue to this day.
We have a long-standing myth in the UK that the countryside is a place of innocence and freedom. But in some ways it is far more exclusive and cruel than the cities, and has been for centuries.

My friend @casparhenderson just found this in his archives. 26 years ago, during our invasion of the Twyford Down cutting, foot in plaster after getting it impaled and smashed by security guards at the Solsbury Hill road protest, but still limping on.
Christ, I feel old.
We felt so confident then. We were up against almost everyone: the government, the construction companies, the roads lobby, the motorists of Middle England. But we seldom doubted we would win. And we did. We stopped John Major's road building programme in its tracks.
We were also much freer then. A series of laws were subsequently passed that severely restricted the right to protest:
1994 Criminal Justice Act
1997 Protection from Harassment Act
2000 Terrorism Act
2005 Serious Organised Crime Act
by governments that claimed to value freedom

Through the lockdown, I’ve been teaching an 8 and a 9 year old, using project-based learning. They’ve made this giant painting panel by panel, each introducing an aspect of ecology. We’ve used it as a platform to explore the living world, geography, maths, science and literacy.
We’ve learnt about the water cycle, carbon cycle, photosynthesis, soil formation, river dynamics, taxonomy, food webs, keystone species, trophic cascades. Through a soil ecology project, we've explored the basic scientific process, and did some measurement and maths.
I don’t want to make it sound easy. Switching from being a parent to a teacher and back again, and persuading kids to accept those different roles, is challenging. I have a lot to learn about teaching methods. But it’s been an education – for all of us.

I left the house at 4.50 this morning, in the thick of the dawn chorus. Whitethroat, blackcap, chiffchaff, reed and sedge warbler, cuckoo, songthrush, all the tits and finches. Because everything sounds and feels so different, by walking then, you double the size of your world.
By 5.25, with the rising of the light, it was all over - just the usual daytime sounds. It was like stepping back through the portal into everyday life. The northern European dawn chorus is among the most intense on Earth. Don't go through life without experiencing it.
