Because it wasn't really an "attack". It was an *assist* by the right-wing of 1 country to the right-wing of another country — part of a global right-wing alliance that Putin's party and the GOP are just 2 members of.

They've all been helping each other for decades and decades.
The fact that most Americans don't realize this is because U.S. establishment media is controlled by people who benefit from right-wing policies.

So it benefits them to keep us hating other countries without giving us enough info that would make us evaluate our own systems.
The U.S, under Bill Clinton, helped Yeltsin win a second term to prevent the resurgence of Soviet communism. It's what eventually led to Putin being in power.

A nation of citizens who aren't well-informed (or don't care) about their *own* nation's history and their gov's bad foreign policy is a nation that falls easily into nationalism, authoritarianism, and war.

Putin sucks. Trump sucks. But what's happening didn't start with them.
