Last night, a judge approved Facebook's $5B settlement with the US govt to resolve privacy violation claims. The allegations of "unscrupulous" behavior were "stunning," he wrote, and warned if FB doesn't do better, he might not be so deferential next time assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6876…
In cases where there's a consent judgment that a judge has to sign off on, the judge holds on to jurisdiction over the matter. So if, in the future, the govt thinks that Facebook is violating the terms of the agreement, they can come back to court and ask the judge to intervene.
Judge Timothy Kelly (one of the newest judges on the DC federal bench, confirmed under Trump), writes that he has some concerns about whether current laws do enough to protect consumer privacy on platforms like Facebook, but "those concerns are largely for Congress"
