What historians will ask, when they look back on this period, is why we allowed this to go on. We have a 25th Amendment. Why is everyone around him going along with the pretense that he's sane? They don't have to.
Nothing stops them--nothing--from saying, "The President is not competent to discharge his duties." If they all stood up and said that, it would all be over. Why are they pretending the emperor is wearing clothes, when so obviously he is not?
Everyone around him, including the estimable Dr. Birx, is complicit with this pretense. She knows, clearly--look at her face--that this is insanity. We all do. Someone just needs to have the courage to say it first. The rest would follow.
We know why people in North Korea won't say, "This guy is nuts." But no one would immediately shoot Dr. Birx if she said it. No one would shoot Pence or Pompeo or Esper if they said it. They know it. So why won't they say it?
If they're thinking, "This decision should be in the hands of the electorate, and it will all be over in November," that makes sense, yes--but why go along with the pretense, now? Why not say, "I can't stand before you and pretend this is normal?"
