A huge part of what motivated me to write #allthatsgood was the barrage of misinformation, conspiracy theories, & objectively bad takes that flood us in name of "discernment."

In 2 years since publication, I hate that this book is more relevant than ever.
It also grieves me that, in my experience, the people I share common faith & heritage w/ are so easily duped & so quickly spread such theories... also in the name of discernment.

Perhaps we are no more foolish than others, but why aren't we wiser? And how might we become so?
What have we missed that has left us sitting ducks for manipulation & deceit? Why aren't we able to sort through the noise & see what is good?
I'm convinced that part of our current epistemological crisis is a Q of spiritual formation. To be able to recognize goodness, we must know the goodness of God. We must seek whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, & commendable. In turn, we will be made good like him.
Insofar as we continue instead to pursue tribalism, social power, consumption, self-righteousness, & personal virtue, we will blind ourselves to what is good. We will continue to make foolish choices & be fooled.
We can not expect to have the mind of Christ in our decisions if we do not cultivate the virtue of Christ in our lives.
When the Scripture speaks of the wise, they are invariably people led by virtue & self-mastery. They are not people who have hacked the system, found the secret memo, or resist authority. First & foremost, they are people seeking to be made good.
This path to discernment is much harder & longer. It will challenge you & require nothing less than your life. There are no shortcuts, no escaping. But this path is good & will make you wise.
