So because I was curious I went ahead and tallied up Fiona Apple songs in a triple meter. It's a definite thing with her! Main takeaway: Of the 56 songs she's released on her 5 albums, 36 have (or are underpinned by) some kind of triple meter (3/4, 6/8, or 12/8).
What might be thought of as her signature rhythm, which is most prevalent, is a kind of galloping 12/8. This is maybe the best illustration but there are tons of them ("Shameika" is another, in a more intense mode)
But there are also lots of more or less straightforward waltzes, including one of my favorites.
Songs like "Fast as You Can" and "Relay" go back and forth from 4/4 to a version of 6/8.
There are some borderline cases where I can feel a 12/8 or 6/8 under the 4/4: "Every Single Night" and "Oh Well" and "On the Bound" and "Window."
Speaking of "Window," a theory: Fiona recently confessed to @emilynussbaum a predilection for love triangles, both in life and song. Love triangles were also the reason Sondheim wrote "Little Night Music" in triple meters. #greatminds

I just had occasion to remember one of the most mortifying, Ianucci-esque moments of my life as an entertainment journalist. I was interviewing Mike Leigh, who I idolize, about his film ALL OR NOTHING. It did not go well, as I detailed in this piece... backstage.com/magazine/artic…
It was one of those interviews where the publicist sits in on it, which is almost never a great set-up. In this case it was the great Fredell Pogodin, who I just noticed retired last year... hollywoodreporter.com/race/veteran-a…
To her credit, Fredell was mortified by how the interview went, and as she showed me to the door of the room she whispered apologetically to me, "He's tired," and I repeated back to her, full volume, in Mike Leigh's earshot, "Oh, he's tired?" I did not mean to embarrass her...
Blocked my right wing cousin on email and FB, just got a text from him: “Could you guys please watch Tucker Carlson‘s opening monologue tonight on FoxNews? I would like to discuss it with you.” The plaintiveness is almost heartbreaking...but hard pass
I debated whether to reply at all, then decided to send some photos of my family and what we're up to (he didn't bother to ask) and wished him well. He is still family but I've learned the hard way that politics is a lose-lose with this one
He texted back...with family photos of his own. This is a win
Never watched DUNE before, and whoa this is hard without a MST3K commentary. About 20 minutes in, the design is fascinating when it’s not tacky but JFC the script! Can’t believe this came between ELEPHANT MAN and DUNE in Lynch oeuvre
