THREAD: During a deadly pandemic and the worst economic shock since the Depression, New York's party machine is doing what we’ve long come to expect: protecting their own from democracy.

Cancelling the presidential primary and booting Bernie from the ballot is part of it.
But it's not the only part.

At hearings last week, the Board of Elections “saw challenge after challenge from party-linked filers looking to boot candidates off ballots."

That includes my dear friend @NurseForNYC. spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/hudson-val…
Sandy would be a relentless force for good on the City Council. But the Brooklyn machine had their favorite and didn't want voters to have a choice. nypost.com/2020/04/20/can…
A similar story is playing out in Queens (hello @maryforassembly!) and The Bronx.

Here in the 50th District, we may well lose our District Leader, who's not even facing an opponent! brooklynpaper.com/brooklyn-insur…
And just a few hours ago, Cuomo successfully orchestrated the cancellation of the June 23rd presidential primary, harming down-ballot progressives and making it harder to push for a transformative agenda the Democratic National Convention.
When I decided to run against an Assemblyman who’s been in office since 1972, and who's father and grandfather had the job before him, I assumed we’d face similar threats.

You don't pass down the same position over three generations without making nice with the machine.
And indeed, when we first filed our ballot petitions last month, we were challenged by the same person who contested multiple other non-machine candidates in our district. Lentol was, of course, spared.
Thankfully, that challenge was never followed up and we’re officially on the ballot for the June 23rd Democratic Primary.

But through all of this, Lentol has stayed silent.
There’s really only one way to break up the incumbent protection racket that’s long dominated our state politics: vote them out when and where you can.

All hands on deck for our democracy.
