When we think about reopening schools, suddenly those under-enrolled, half-empty schools start looking real attractive as we figure out how to social distance in the classroom. Think of what a remarkable tool for integration this could be as overcrowded schools need to spread out
In NYC, and across the country, low-income black and Latino schools sit half-empty while wealthier white schools are packed to the brims. We could start merging schools to allow more space in a way that integrates, something we should have been doing anyway.
Or, maybe we stay put and for once segregation will benefit black and brown kids who have far more room to space out in their half-empty schools. I mean good luck in those schools that are over-enrolled because white parents want to avoid the black neighborhood school.🤷🏽♀️
