I'm an #Egyptologist trained at @unibirmingham specializing in #Theban #tombdecoration of the 1st millennium BCE. For the past 9 years, I've shifted my focus to #Nile travel journals in late C19 and early C20. @nelcuw @ebadiary #dayofdh2020
I work with undergrad interns who help me #transcribe #primarysource material written by travelers to #Egypt including #archaeologists, #artists and the #hiddenwomen...wives, mistresses, secretaries and administrators. Our work began with the unpublished diaries of #EmmaBAndrews
We spent a couple of years to transcribe all 19 volumes into #plaintext which we then #encoded in #XML using @TEIconsortium guidelines which we use as the basis for #NamedEntityRecognition of people, places, boats...our #XSLT script returns an alphabetized index of all this info
We use @omeka for our project website and compiled #NER output to build a #database of people mentioned in the diaries in the form of an online #socialnetwork. We currently have 839 people!
Our #primarysource data includes a range of #egyptology archival material I've been collecting. This past year, one of my amazing @ebadiary students singlehandedly transcribed an entire #handwritten archive of material! Reading C19 handwriting is a skill...
Here are some of the tools we've developed to work with our #egyptology #data:
1. Historical Markup Tool to automate the process of @TEIconsortium XML markup and #NamedEntityRecognition…
2. a #georectifier tool to facilitate working with the many spelling variants of place names.
3. a tool to clean up #OCR
4. experiments in Handwriting Recognition (#HTR), training algorithms on C19 handwriting. This didn't go too well!!
5. a #database of #egyptology artifacts collected by #EmmaBAndrews and #TheodoreMDavis which we developed by scraping the #opensource Met. Museum website using a script written by an intern
6. Students in @uwcse built a prototype 'Who Was Where When' #d3 visualization mapping individual diary entries and people onto a contemporary base map. Excited to develop this further #egyptology
Big shoutout to all the #interns I've worked with in the past 8 years who have contributed so much to this project. They're credited on our website. Also want to thank @UW_iSchool #MLIS capstone students who worked on #metadata and @Omeka dev last year
Here's our end of year report from last year on the @nelcuw website Looking forward to more adventures in #DH! @ds_uw
