As anyone who has ever tried to get unemployment or healthcare will tell you, our current system assumes that the worst possible outcome is not death or poverty but someone accidentally getting a little more than they deserve.
“Deserve.”
“We understand you’re struggling to feed your family since getting laid off, but put yourself in our shoes! How could we live with ourselves if we knew you were just...*getting* money??”
I say this as I watch friends struggling through an unemployment system designed to thwart them. The “anti-Big Government” brigades have succeeded in creating a government far mor brutal and hateful than any terrible welfare state they could have imagined.
Just like healthcare, the worst comes when you’re already down. You barely encounter your terrible insurance until you’re already diagnosed with cancer. You’re supposed to dig through fifty pages of paperwork for benefits you’ll never receive when you’re already struggling.
But this is all intentional! It’s the politics of scarcity, of meanness. Democrats and Republicans have been perpetuating it for decades and it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Starve social services so that you can insist there’s not enough. Ta-dah!
The entire modern Democratic/Republican political framework would collapse if anyone were brave enough to say, “Actually...there’s enough.”
Which is why certain politicians are so dangerous to the establishment.
Wow this tweet really blew up. I encourage everyone to check out soundcloud. Not MY soundcloud. Just soundcloud generally. Great platform.
UPDATE: With language like this, how could anyone be confused!
