There are a lot of places in society where we trade off freedom vs risk of death

We don't make everyone wear helmets In cars

We let people ski / base jump / ride motorcycles / fly small planes

We let cancer patients decide whether to get another round of chemo
It is not clear we always want to do everything possible to just minimize risk of death

There are tradeoffs and we should clearly understand what they are and discuss them
We also let people do things that risk other people:

We let people drive huge SUVs that are more dangerous to others in accidents

We let people with HIV have sex

We (used to) let people with the flu outside, or even go to work!!

What is the point of keeping the Bay Area locked down until June? What are we going to get in another month?

Unless we are willing to lockdown until there is a vaccine (18 months), it seems to me that we are continuing to put economic hardship on people for nothing...
I worry that we fucked up not implementing the Swedish model, and now that lockdowns have become hopelessly politicized and a partisan issue, we never will...
Looking at today's per capita mortality rate in Sweden vs. rest of Nordics ignores the rest of the curve from now until the end of pandemic (it may be the case that through higher spread today Sweden has front-loaded mortality).
