THREAD: Top tips on memorising on the Qur'an this Ramadan and beyond.

Alhamdulillah almost 12 years ago I was blessed to have completed my memorisation (hifdh) of the Qur'an and here are a few things that helped me...
1) My personal technique was just to read the portion I wanted to memorise repetitively the night before (not attempting to memorise), then wake up in the morning to memorise it. The key here is first you familiarise yourself with it, then you memorise. Don't rush the hifdh part.
2) The best time for memorisation is the morning time. By the afternoon/evening, your brain is fried and you're mentally & physically tired. Plus our Prophet PBUH made du'a to Allah to bless the early mornings of his ummah (Abu Dawud) so you can't miss the barakah!
3) Get into the habit of listening to expert reciters. Pick your favourite one then continuously listen to the Qur'an so you fall in love with it and it automatically plays in your head. The reciter should recite at a moderate pace with excellent tajwīd so you learn that too.
4) Make sure you're reading to a teacher or at least a fellow student. This is to ensure someone is picking up on your mistakes and so that there's pressure on you to read to someone, else it's easy to slack and lose motivation.
5) If you're wondering where to start, it's probably best to go for the shorter chapters first. You should ideally memorise the entire 30th juz, then memorise chapters such as Al-Mulk, Yāsīn, last 2 verses of Al-Baqarah, etc. before moving on to the longer ones.
6) Be in the company of the people of the Qur'an. Yes, that includes friends & scholars, but it also includes what you consume. Listening to reciters, or even reminders related to the Qur'an/Tafsir will definitely help keep you motivated and enthusiastic. Stay consistent!
7) Follow a translation to get an idea of the overall meaning of what you're reciting. This will aid your memorisation and make it more enjoyable. In the meantime, don't forget to revise over the parts you've already memorised as it's easy to forget over time!
8) Recite the newly memorised sections/chapters in your prayer. This serves as a great revision technique and boosts your confidence. It also changes the dynamics of your prayer and motivates you to learn and memorise more.
9) Abstain from sin - knowledge is a light and this light is extinguished by the darkness of vices. Make du'a to Allah for He has promised to make memorisation easy for us [54:22] so ask Him to make it easy for you!
May Allah allow us to memorise the Qur'an, reflect over its meanings, become an embodiment of it's teachings, and a means of spreading its beautiful message. 🙏🏼
