Crazy time in what we hope is a once in a lifetime event. Some people are mad/angry about NOT opening up. And others are angry about those that want to open up and are not shy about using strong language to defend their position. Politics amplifies the rhetoric and the emotion.
Remember that SIP (Shelter in Place) was a "tactic" to prevent overwhelming the hospitals. It was never a solve for the pandemic. Never was, and cannot be. Today in U.S., most hospitals are not overwhelmed, so it would be natural to assume that we would start to open up.
If you argue we need to keep SIPing, even though hospitals are not overwhelmed, the question then would be "to what end?" Most smart experts say a vaccine could be 9-18 months away. Do you recommend SIP for that entire time? What is the goal in that case? And who owns that harm?
SIPing has massive costs as well. Not just the immediate economic harm to the families that can afford it least, but long-term physical health & mental health issues caused by the pain of the economic ruin. There are no easy answers here. Consequences in all directions.
