"Rather than proclaiming the miracles and mysteries that they uniquely exist to proclaim, church leaders seem to have opted instead to talk like middle managers."

How the churches in this country are letting a crisis go to waste: telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/05/0…
The issue for churches isn't that they shouldn't be worrying about these problems, but that there are lots of other people worrying about them too - & with more responsibility for them too. Whereas if churches don't go on about theology, no one else will.
The problem for the churches is that in a way they've been too successful. Their doctrines of compassion for the sick & poor have been nationalised. As a result, unless they focus on the weird stuff that is their USP but which they seem embarrassed by, they face redundancy.
It's not like the Church has never been through the horrors of epidemic before. More than any other single institution, perhaps, it has a deep memory of plague, & a great reservoir of approaches to making sense of it. Yet it seems nervous of invoking them. unherd.com/2020/03/plague…
This really should be an open goal...
Now feeling very ashamed. This is back of the net.
