It's early in the morning in New Zealand but I (@SiobhanLeachman) couldn't wait to get started. I'm going to be spending the next week with you all, showing you what I do with @BloodhoundTrack . Feel free to ask questions & I'll attempt to answer them to the best of my ability.
Lets start by explaining how to log into and use the Bloodhound Tracker website. First, you need to get an @ORCID_Org identifier. This is because you'll be creating and adding data to the site. So if you don't have an Orcid already go to orcid.org and sign up.
The Bloodhound website gives some really clear instructions on how to get started bloodhound-tracker.net/get-started. Please, please, please make some information you put into ORCID public. Even if it's just your full name and your employer.
Once you've got your ORCID.org identifier go to the Bloodhound website bloodhound-tracker.net and log in with your Orcid id. You'll then be taken to your profile page.
If you've collected specimens whose metadata has been loaded into @GBIF, you can go to the "Specimens" tab to claim them. This will link your specimens to your ORCID id, enriching the data and helping to ensure you get credit for your collecting or identifying work.
Claim your specimens by pressing the "net" button for those you've collected, the "microscope" button for those you've identified or the "both" button, where you've done both!
If you didn't collect or identify the specimens press the "Not me" button. Don't panic if you make an error! You can rectify it. Just go to either the "Fix Claim" tab, if you've claimed a specimen incorrectly. or the "Reclaim ignored" tab. if you've pressed "not me" by mistake.
Once you've claimed your specimens then press the "Science enabled" tab. This will tell you what papers have used your specimens to further scientific knowledge! This does rely on the authors of those papers crediting and citing the DOI of the GBIF dataset they used. #CiteTheDOI
But what if you want to help other people? That's going to be my next thread.
