so everybody seems to have harped on the FB/Twitter/Insta post about the pizza food truck owner and his @Grubhub bill and subsequent minuscule take-home. However, there's a little more to unpack, and while I'm not defending either, always look at your data and ask questions. 1/
He had 46 orders for a total of $1042.63 - $22.66/order avg. - which, if a regular pizza joint in a highly populated area, is sort of average for a 16" pizza. - if a food truck "long" pizza, that's like two takeaway orders. And note, he said "food truck", so this isn't B&M 2/
The agreed upon Grubhub commission/fee is about 20% (19.8%), which is their cost for advertising, usually hosting an ordering site, and so forth. Having done e-commerce many times before, the split of 10% for ops and 10% for marketing seems in line - and this may be on top 3/
...of whatever Pizza Guy is doing on his own. Grubhub is supposed to be turnkey. Then comes the delivery commission... which if he actually had a delivery driver as a B&M has him paying the driver $2.07 per run (plus any tips that are supposed to go directly to the driver) 4/
Then is the processing fee, which is usually driven by the car processor... which is $0.84 per order... which is high, but there's overhead there (bank, terminal, gateway fees, etc. - an no, you can't just say - "just use PayPal" you ableist freaks) - 5/
The biggest question of debate is the $231.00 in "Promotions" which is usually an "X off a $Y order" that is for first time users/customers of GrubHub or a specific campaign. This is negotiated as an opt-in or opt-out between Grubhub and the merchant, but is average $5 here 6/
...so far, I see nothing out of line. Except maybe that the prices for Grubhub menus need to be priced more or adjusted overall for the whole experience to cover actual costs. The latter part of the post are covering 7 order adjustments, improperly filled or delivered orders 7/
We use @DoorDash ourselves and have had at least 3-4 out of the last 4 months of use (10 orders a month for lunches) that have had a missing or incorrect item. This is basically getting a customer a refund for a bad order. $131.19 or 12% of the order intake $18.74/avg 8/
Not sure if GrubHub credits a single order with the refund or the portion of the missing - but that's sounding more like complete orders. The commissions are refunded, processing and even the promotions... and with that 4 of 7 orders used the coupons ($5 average) 9/
I know at the end it denotes 42 delivery and 4 pickup, but the math is negligible there in the percentage take. But to be honest, my recommendation is, if this is a killer, setup your own e-commerce site with SEO, drop GrubHub, and pay a delivery driver minimum wage - 10/
and you'll see that your pizza prices will increase, most likely during the pandemic, which is a challenging commerce environment as it stands, and move on. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS question your data and do the math and question motive. 11/
This is my Data Literacy TED Talk...

To others, this also explains why people are "data dumb" and "visualization blind" when it comes to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic data, and why I get my panties in a bind over bad data and crappy data sets. We need to improve data literacy. /END
