While injuries ravaged last season, Trezeguet has returned to the goals this year. At his best there are few frontmen who can combine his array of gifts and lead an attack with the same ability.

Milan - Goalkeeper
The athleticism and anticipation of Dida have made him that rarest of specimens: an excellent Brazilian keeper. Even amongst the exalted company of Serie A, he looks something special.
69. Didier Drogba 🇨🇮
Marseille - Striker
Opposition defences seem to have no answer to the threat of Drogba. Since his move from Guingamp, he’s been in exceptional form at the Stade Velodrome, first in the Champions League and now the UEFA Cup. A force of nature.
68. Nihat Kahveci 🇹🇷
Real Sociedad - Forward
There were few in La Liga who could compare to Kahveci last year as the Turkish star was in exceptional form. His combination with Kovacevic was the perfect ‘little and large’ pairing and nearly carried the Basques to the title.
67. Mateja Kezman 🇷🇸
PSV Eindhoven - Striker
All round Europe nobody can match the prolific strike rate of Kezman. He’s scoring goals by the bucketload, thanks to his intelligent movement and deadly finishing.

The marauding defender is among the best in the game. Comfortable on the ball but rugged and physical, he’s among the biggest stars in the Bundesliga and has continued to excel since joining Bayern.
62. Maniche 🇵🇹
Porto - Central Midfield
The man who does it all. In Porto’s midfield Maniche blends defence and attack with no little skill and energy and remains one of José Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants.
61. Michel Salgado 🇪🇸
Real Madrid - Right-back
Flying full-back who has become a fixture at the Bernabeu. His work in tandem with Luis Figo down the right flank is a defender’s nightmare.
60. Lillian Thuram 🇫🇷
Juventus - Defender
That he’s longer quite at his peak but still among the very best tells you all you need about Thuram. An almost impassable object either in the centre or right of defence, his £24m price tag was a bargain.
59. Michael Owen 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Liverpool - Striker
No longer quite possessing the pace of his early years, Owen is arguably a more rounded forward now. His ability to link play and find pockets of space have shown growing maturity. Surely set to be England’s highest ever scorer.
58. David Albelda 🇪🇸
Valencia - Midfielder
Fulcrum of the Valencia midfield, Albelda does the unglamorous parts of the game so very well. Crisp passer and positionally aware, he has been in outstanding form once again.

The blend of pace, power and finishing ability is reminiscent of a young Ronaldo. Still raw, his recent move to Inter May well smooth off some of those rough edges and turn the Brazilian into one of the world’s best.
56. Johan Micoud 🇫🇷
Werder Bremen - Midfielder
A masterful creator in the Werder midfield, his passing always finds its mark. His limited chances for the national team say much about France’s midfield riches.

Roma - Defender
A hugely classy defender who is equally capable in the centre or the left of the backline. Already looking a bargain at Roma since his big move from Ajax.
54. Juan Carlos Valeron 🇪🇸

One of the finest playmakers in the global game, Valeron is the orchestrator of a superb Depor side. He has gained admirers throughout Europe for his grace and technique.
53. Rio Ferdinand 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

His enforced absence through suspension deprives both United and England of a masterful defender. Now we’ll established at Old Trafford he has made a huge difference in shoring up a porous backline.
52. Santiago Canizares 🇪🇸
Valencia - Goalkeeper
In superb form once again behind a first class defence. Canizares doesn’t always get the plaudits he deserves but there can be few more impressive performers between the sticks.

Boca Juniors - Forward
The best player in South America. Tevez is among the most wanted players for every club with his technique and application. A true gem who has made Boca one of the world’s best sides.

At the hub of so much of Sociedad’s best work, Alonso was one of the revelations of last season. His range of passing and intelligence mark him out as a player of terrific quality.
49. Walter Samuel 🇦🇷
Roma - Centre-back
The meanest defence in Serie A this season has been Roma’s, thanks in no small part to the contribution of Samuel. Hard as nails and fleet of foot, he is an uncompromising opponent.

Valencia - Midfielder
Although injuries have hampered his progress Aimar is unquestionably a class act. His quality on the ball is exceptional and he manages to ghost into pockets of space with grace and style.

Milan - Right-back
Another Milan new boy at the other end of the age spectrum. The flying full-back has enjoyed an excellent campaign at San Siro and looks on course for a second Scudetto.

Valencia - Winger
The pace and trickery down the left flank make Vicente one of the most exciting youngsters in world football. His direct running and fearless style have made him a Mestella idol.
35. Christian Vieri 🇮🇹
Inter - Striker
While injuries have taken their toll, there are few more dependable goalscorers than Bobo. His power, physicality and potency in the area have made him a hit at a string of clubs and his record for the Azzurri is outstanding.
34. Juninho Pernambucano 🇧🇷
Lyon - Midfielder
The free-kick maestro who is so much more than that. His skill and vision are of the highest order and have made the Brazilian the biggest star in Lyon’s all-conquering line-up.
33. Ashley Cole 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

29. David Beckham 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Real Madrid - Midfielder
A season that started so well has become something of a nightmare. Beckham isn’t the only Madrid player to suffer since Christmas, but it has all come as something of a shock to the Galacticos.
28. Clarence Seedorf 🇳🇱
Milan - Midfielder
His versatility can sometimes count against him but how many other players have the range of Seedorf? Seemingly adept in every facet of the game, he’s as smooth as silk and a born winner.
27. Claude Makelele 🇫🇷
Chelsea - Midfielder
Now that he’s gone it’s painfully obvious how important the Frenchman was in Madrid. Their gaping hole in midfield contrasts starkly with Chelsea’s central axis, Lampard set free by Makelele’s arrival.
26. Luís Figo 🇵🇹
Real Madrid - Winger
Despite Beckham’s arrival Figo has retained his role on the right of the Real midfield. The original Galactico was one of the more consistent performers this year, chipping in with plenty of assists in a frustrating season.
25. Andrea Pirlo 🇮🇹
Milan - Midfielder
By far the best year yet for the young regista, Pirlo has been at the heart of Milan’s Scudetto push. His weight of pass and panache on the ball have made him universally admired.
24. Iker Casillas 🇪🇸
Real Madrid - Goalkeeper
Forced to pick the ball out of his own net time and again this season, Casillas has still been among La Liga’s best performers. His saves have spared the blushes of his defenders and his reflexes are as sharp as ever.

The inspiration behind the Dragons’ tremendous season. The Brazilian-born playmaker is a master at linking things together and making those around him look good. Classy operator.

17. Roberto Carlos 🇧🇷
Real Madrid - Left-back
His famed potency with free-kicks might now seem like a bad joke but the Brazilian’s ability to dominate the wing is unrivalled. His energy, non-stop running and famed left foot make him a great of the era.
16. Roy Makaay 🇳🇱
Bayern Munich - Striker
He might not be the top man for his own national team but at club level Makaay is exceptional. His directness and thirst for goals have made him a huge success in La Liga and now the Bundesliga as his reputation keeps growing.
15. Paolo Maldini 🇮🇹
Milan - Defender
Now employed in a central berth rather than his more familiar position at left-back, Maldini continues to shine. He’s showing few signs of slowing down and even at nearly 36 is still one of the best in the world.
14. Roy Keane 🇮🇪
Manchester United - Midfielder
Still the force to be reckoned with in the Premier League. While injuries have taken their toll, nobody is more influential, more demanding of their teammates or more frightening to opponents.
13. Edgar Davids 🇳🇱
Barcelona - Midfielder
The arrival of Davids has had a transformative effect on Barca. At Christmas they were languishing well off the pace but the drive and tenacity of the Pitbull have restored them to the La Liga hunt.
12. Gianluigi Buffon 🇮🇹
Juventus - Goalkeeper
It’s hard to find an obvious flaw in Buffon’s game. Athletic, intelligent and alert he’s without a fault and looks set to be Italy’s number 1 for years to come.
11. Robert Pires 🇫🇷
Arsenal - Winger
The Gunners have a true gem in their French midfielder. Not especially quick, he compensates with skill, guile and vision. A huge component in their recent success.
10. Michael Ballack 🇩🇪
Bayern Munich - Midfielder
The disappointments of 2002 now seem a long time ago. Since moving to Bavaria, Ballack has been in sparkling form with goals and drive from midfield. A lack of quality international teammates may frustrate hopes of trophies.
9. Francesco Totti 🇮🇹
Roma - Forward
The brilliance of Totti has been plain for all to see. His artistry, intelligence and skill put him in lofty company and a worthy successor to the likes of Mazzola, Rivera and Baggio.
8. Ronaldinho 🇧🇷
Barcelona - Forward
The ultimate showman. Disrupted by injuries in the first half of the season, Ronaldinho has been in scintillating form lately. His wizardry is a joy to watch.
7. Andriy Shevchenko 🇺🇦

6. Ruud van Nistelrooy 🇳🇱
Manchester United - Striker
Rarely has there been a man who more enjoys scoring goals. His relentless desire to find the back of the net is combined with the subtle movement and deft finishing of a master.
5. Zinedine Zidane 🇫🇷
Real Madrid - Midfielder
Grace, poise and extravagant ability are the things that Zidane most embodies. His recent form has been well short of his standards but he can still turn it on when he wants to.
4. Pavel Nedved 🇨🇿
Juventus - Midfielder
Last year’s Ballon d’Or was well deserved. The Czech star was at his effervescent best, bursting forward from midfield. This year Juve have fallen back but there are not many who can match his range of talents.
3. Alessandro Nesta 🇮🇹
Milan - Centre-back
Peerless. A defender of pure class, Nesta’s positioning and awareness make him the best in the business. The timing of his tackles and interceptions are the hallmark of a man in control.
2. Ronaldo 🇧🇷
Real Madrid - Striker
Not as electric in his running as he was as a youngster but Ronaldo might now be a better striker. His movement, finishing and link-up play have all developed and make him just as phenomenal as ever.
1. Thierry Henry 🇫🇷
Arsenal - Forward
How are defences meant to contain a player like Henry? He can beat you for pace, bamboozle you with trickery and finish with unerring accuracy. A prince among men and a special talent we are lucky to observe.
