This previously slipped my attention because it's a very thin book, but Michael Gove and Sarah Vine also own 'Beyond Human Rights: Defending Freedom' by Alan Benoist, a central figure in the European New Right and Third Positionist movements. Just a couple over from Ruth Rendell. Close up of Michael Gove's bookshelf with Ruth Rendell, Burns Poems and Songs, and Alan de Benoist.
de Benoist's 'Defending Freedoms' is published by Arktos, the publisher closely linked to American White Nationalist Richard Spencer and until a recent amicable reorganisation, part of his AltRight corp.
De Benoist's politics are hard to summarize in one tweet since they're deliberately obfuscatory, so here's a summary of his evolution from an article hosted on our site.

More on De Benoist's associations with Russian fascists during the early 1990s, in this excerpt from Martin Lee's The Beast Awakens.

libcom.org/library/excerp… This notion was shared by Alain de Benoist, who visited Russia in March 1992 and participated in several public meetings with prominent opposition figures. For a number of years, the leading French New Right philosopher had argued that it was important to move beyond the traditional Left/Right dichotomy. Since the end of the Cold War, this cleavage had become completely antiquated, according to de Benoist. Rather tha
A lot of people are pushing 'Gove owning a book by Irving doesn't mean he's a Holocaust denier' which is a straw man. Gove's article on Irving instead makes a point of conflating the condemnation of atrocities by Britain or the US with Holocaust denial.

While David Irving is a famous Holocaust denier and Gove can claim to have written about him twenty years ago. Alan de Benoist is a very obscure fascist, and this book is published by a very obscure fascist publisher. Has Gove written about de Benoist?
Gove defended Conservative MEPs for refusing to back a censure of Victor Orban, and they sit in the same group in the EU parliament. De Benoist is a fan of Orban, and also cited by people like Marine Le Pen and Steve Bannon.

Many of Gove's defenders today have been saying he must own the Irving book because he sits on some Holocaust committees. Perhaps he owns De Benoist because as Justice Secretary he's was trying to scrap the Human Rights Act?

More of the French New Right on Michael Gove and Sarah Vine's bookshelf. This time it's Guillaume Faye, also published by Arktos media. Sarah Vine tweet with a picture of another bookshelfClose up of 'Why We Fight' and Archeofuturism' by Guillaume Faye
The two books Gove owns are 'Archeofuturism: European Visions of the Post-Catastrophic Age', and 'Why We Fight: Manifesto of the European Resistance'. Faye was in the same organisation as De Benoist until the mid-1980s, and is even more extreme. Cover of Guillaum Faye, Archeofuturism. Faye is a major source of the Identitarian far right's 'replacement theory' - that Europe is going to be destroyed by immigration. Here's another of his book covers. Faye: Ethnic apocalypse, the coming European Civil War. Foreword by Jared Taylor
The idea that Michael Gove would read Faye in order to 'counter prejudice' as Sarah Vine claims for their ownership of Irving, because Gove has also authored an Islamophobic tract, Celsius 7/7. Celsius 7/7 book cover. Subtitle: How the West's policy of appeasement has provoked yet more fundamentalist terror - and what has to be done now.
'"Nowhere has moral clarity been more lacking in British state policy.. than in our approach to the Islamist threat [...] a sizeable minority" of Britain's 1.8 million Muslims hold "rejectionist Islamist views"'
theguardian.com/politics/2014/…
From Gove's foreword "The west faces a challenge to its values, culture and freedom as profound in its way as the threat posed by fascism and communism. But the response to that challenge from many in the west is all too often confused, temporising, weak and compromised."
