#MayThe4thBeWithYou and if you are light trapping tonight... may the Maybugs be with you! 💡

AKA Cockchafers, these large scarab beetles are attracted to light. Did you know we have two species in the U.K.? #TeamBeetle ImageImage
The Common Cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha) dominates the South (England) & is a frequent visitor to light traps at this time of year. Image
Whereas, the Northern Cockchafer (Melolontha hippocastani), is a nationally rare species restricted to N. England, Scotland & Ireland. I’ve been lucky to see this one twice in Scotland 😁 #TeamBeetle Image
Scarab sorcerer @BlattaMann put together these excellent ID resources to help you tell them apart! If you find a #Cockchafer please take photos (esp. of it’s bottom) & upload your sighting to iRecord: brc.ac.uk/irecord/ #Maybugs ImageImage
