The way women who are incarcerated in prison/jail are treated while pregnant is beyond imaginable. They are one of the most overlooked group in jail. We all have heard about the messed-up conditions in the correction system, but I do not think we really.... #njcurj #PregnantWoman
understand how bad it is.When was the last time you read an article, new paper or hear any new about the mistreatment of a pregnant women while incarcerated? There are 1,396 pregnant women admitted to prison: 3.8% of newly admitted women and 0.6% of all women were pregnant#njcurj
pregnant in December 2016. There were 753 live births,46 miscarriages,11 abortions, 4 stillbirths and no maternal deaths. Low birth weight and fetal death rate is high for women incarcerated during their pregnancy. Medical record show that this group is both medically and #njcurj
and socially high risk. Many facilities have negative effects on the health of the women and the outcome of their pregnancies. These facilities have poor health status and deficient health care.Studies has showed that the quality of health care especially during pregnancy#njcurj
and found problems associated with access, the comprehensiveness of care and provider sensitivity to the emotional needs and personal desire of these women. Since facilities are not providing the essential resources to these women it's 10x harder for them to make certain #njcurj
decisions. Jails and prisons are supposed to have reproductive health services available for women pregnant or not but it's not being done. Its not like these facilities do not have the means to meet the women needs they choose to not follow through with the rules that is #njcurj
in place. Something that caught my attention was the lack of resources for incarcerated pregnant women. Nurses roles are supposed to be able to deal with a number of medical health problems and be able to get patients the proper care if they aren't able to do so. #njcurj
It is worrisome to me that the nurses are not being held responsible for some of the health problems that pregnant women face. These women aren't free; they cannot just get up and go to doctors appointments, cook decent meals or go to the ER whenever they think something#njcurj
is wrong. Correctional nurses should be more concerned about the well being of the mothers and the babies that are in prisons and jails. Also, there are many women that were to be sexually active and want to avoid pregnancy once they are released but don't have access to #njucrj
long term contraceptives while in these facilities. In an article I read they examine the risk of unintended pregnancy among women during Cook County Jail intake by assessing basic contraceptive history, and the need for emergency contraception at intake and release. #njcurj
This is a cross sectional study of women 18-50 years of age. The surveys included multiple- choice and close-ended questions via interviews. Some of the topics included contraceptive use and pregnancy risk/desire. They found out that many women would be interested in #njcurj
contraceptive options if it was available. Facilities should be offering different contraceptives options to inmates that want them. There are tons of options that we can look at to help the way women are treated in jail/prison. First, we need cooperation and partnership #njcurj
with the department of corrections. At first, I didn't fully understand why facilities would not want to help and advocated for these women from the beginning. Until I started to think about how they really don’t care about certain things along as it's not affecting them #njcurj
personally. These facilities need to be held responsible for the health of the pregnant women and their children while in their care. Then maybe these women will receive the care that the deserve. Then, it would be a good idea to talk to some of the mothers or soon to be #njcurj
mothers to see what changes they would like to see take place. If you don’t truly understand what they are going through or their problems and need how will you be able to help them. Lastly, there needs to be some major improvement to #njcurj
the resources that are available to the women. Maybe some parenting classes, self-improving classes, workshops to teach them how to re-enter society and stay afloat. We have to be willing to help people in their time of need and so breaking them down even more. #njcurj
