The Wages of American Political Decay wp.me/p4ja0Z-NeG @FukuyamaFrancis casually alludes to a "quaint model of human cognition" to which only earnest reformers ascribe and for which there has proven no evidence--and he's right--
but it hit me (though he did not write it) that this is the model upon which the Scottish Enlightenment, the American Founding, and liberalism à la JS Mill are based--and nothing Americans believe, politically, makes sense without this model.
I became gloomy. Then I thought that this may be, like the problem of free will, something we just shouldn't think too much about. We have to behave as if we all have it. We feel, subjectively, as if we have it. Yet none of us can figure out how we have it,
and there's no good argument for believing we have it. So perhaps we should just continue to behave as if people are rational, and ignore the evidence that they are not, whatsoever. We've made it this far by pretending we all have free will, right?
