Trying to write a blog post about the challenges of remote-consulting. It's been a real challenge for me - for a few specific reasons.
Firstly - the foundation of *strategic* work is doing work "in context". I talk about that in this piece: tomcritchlow.com/2019/04/04/the…
Every project sits within a nested set of ever-expanding contexts:
But in a remote-working world sensing context and understanding the adjacent ideas/work and ideas within a client's organization is incredibly difficult.

Any tips?
This is only compounded by the tightening OODA loop that companies are operating on right now - planning cycles are measured in days not months. We're operating in a shifting sands of context.
The second big idea that's missing in remote work is the ability to think on your feet and react in the moment. I outlined this theory of consulting in my Yes! And... series last year:
This improv and on-the-fly sensemaking is very difficult remotely where the client interactions are both limited and all mediated through "meetings" and zooms.

Any tips?
What's needed for successful remote-consulting?

- Regular communication channels *including* informal channels
- The ability to gain wider contexts for the work
- The ability to turn work around inside the client's OODA loop

Any others? Would love to write up some advice here
Ha - definitely feeling all of these pain points right now on client projects: tomcritchlow.com/2019/11/18/yes…
