The U.S. federal government's response plan for the COVID-19 pandemic: give up on trying to do anything about it, go on TV every day to claim that everything is going fantastic, and blame all the bad things that happen on whatever state they happened in.
The Trump administration is gambling that 10,000 Americans dying daily from coronavirus won't seriously impact Trump's support, or rather it won't harm Trump was much as being publicly seen trying to do something but repeatedly failing would harm him.
A tiny part of me understands the Trump administration's approach to coronavirus, because at least ten times a day I too have the thought, "But what if things were NOT this way?"

Only the problem is the Trump admin has mistaken that daydream for a policy position.

President Trump says that he is "surprised" that his Attorney General won't criminally investigate either the previous president, or his 2020 election opponent. Trump then adds: "I have no doubt that [Barr] may have another feeling."

None of this is compatible with rule of law.
Trump is firing Inspector Generals that investigate him or his political appointees; he is attacking and threatening any and all federal whistleblowers; and he has openly politicized DNI to serve his political interests.

All of this goes way beyond early-stage dictator moves.
We're about to have no independent Inspector Generals; no ability for any whistleblowers to come forward without risk of ruining their life; and a politicized intel service that makes no pretense of weaponizing DNI's access for the benefit of the President's reelection campaign.

Last year, Georgia Innocence Project client Johnny Lee Gates had his conviction overturned. The GA Supreme Court upheld that ruling earlier this year.

On Monday, prosecutors agreed that Gates could be released on his recognizance, awaiting a new trial.

The judge refused.
Because Gates was once convicted of murder, the judge ordered that Gates would stay in prison for however many years it took until he got a new trial.

Gates has served 43 years. He is in his 60s. In this pandemic, he has no reason to be confident he'll live to see a trial date.
Right now, Gates is entering a guilty plea in livestream court proceeding.

It is an Alford plea, because Gates maintains he did not commit this crime. But it is a guilty plea. It's the only way he can be sure that he will live long enough to see freedom.

I am fascinated by the Grenell memo

Officials who requested the name of the unknown person from intel reports (who would turn out to be Flynn) in mid-December included Treasury, @USNATO, Energy, "Chief Syria Group," and Ambassadors to Turkey and Russia. grassley.senate.gov/sites/default/…
Those unmasking requests had nothing to do with Flynn's calls to Kislyak, which didn't happen until the end of the month. Whatever reports these officials were reading, which were based on intercepts from which Flynn's name had to be masked, had to do with something else.
But what was Flynn involved in that would have been of concern for people at Energy, Treasury, NATO?

Well, the nuclear reactor deal that Michael Flynn was texting his business partners about during Trump's inauguration would seem to fit the bill.
