Steam engine classification from 1924 was based on letters indicating driving axles.

There was a wide range of classes to service the network.
The standard gauge New South Wales North Coast line was extended from Kyogle to South Brisbane and opened in 1930.

The Class 6 locomotive (2-2-2) were the first to go into service after the New South Wales Government became responsible for the railways in NSW.
