Here are some notes on the new inspection powers from the HoA, nothing I enjoy more than comparing old legislation with recent amendments.

The inspection powers in s.50 are very very broad. Maybe too broad—it seems they could be used to investigate any “health hazard”, eg illegal drug use. This is probably important to clarify! However insofar as there is news here the news happened in 2018 when act was passed 2/
As the new inspection powers in s.50 are almost *exactly* the same as the *old* inspection powers! One change is that they can now stop a moving vehicle.
The protection from personal liability is also surprisingly broad—but once again, it’s almost exactly the same as what was there before, except that “peace officers” (police) are specifically mentioned.
In short, most of what’s interesting here isn’t new!
Also they did not repeal S.50.2 which limits the power of the peace officers...
And (2) says, notwithstanding (1), they still need a warrant to search a home without permission. They CANNOT search your home without a warrant, without permission. (1) giveth, but (2) taketh away!

Bys I came on the internet after supper and assumed based on the posts I saw that the police could enter my home without a warrant and without my permission if there was a suspected breach of a public health order. That’s terrifying. Don’t be at it!!!
This is a major source of anxiety for some people. Don’t jump the gun and assume that there’s an authoritarian wave sweeping our house of assembly without cause!!
