"We've tolerated this in a time of full employment..." As if education for anything other than economic purposes is some kind of pointless frivolity, to be "tolerated" only when times are good.
As the thread below argues, we need to recapture a way of thinking about the purpose of education that is not crassly econometric; one that values the idea of "humane education" and that sees the power of learning to enrich our lives, if not our wallets.
