1/ I don’t know if many Americans have actually seen the numbers.
As of today, we have 74,810 #American deaths.
Total Global deaths are 265,885*
worldometers.info/coronavirus/

The #USA makes up 28.1% of ALL global deaths from #COVID19

*Without true transparency from #China

But WHY?
2/ #SARSCoV2 does not have a particular affinity for #Americans.

No.

Even Northern #Italy, who was overrun, has fought it back.
New York is almost like a separate country.
Excluding #NewYork from our data, cases in ALL other states are increasing.

3/ #NewYork and other countries have proven that fighting the virus is possible.
#HongKong, #NewZealand, #Korea, #Germany, #Greece, even the #CzechRepublic have stopped the spread, and all with different strategies.
4/ The #CDC, our leading public health organization, has been largely absent from our national response since the beginning. Despite finally creating a step wise approach to safely “reopening” the country, it is again being ignored by the administration
apnews.com/7a00d5fba3249e…
5/ From the beginning, our #national leadership has dismissed and minimized the very real threat a novel #viral #pandemic would pose.

Our continued lack of national #leadership has only cultivated confusion and #fear in the public, as well as a distrust in #science.
6/ On 9/11 3,000 #Americans were innocently murdered by a foreign terrorists.

If we continue to ignore science and mitigation efforts, there is a possibility we could see the loss of 3,000 Americans from #COVID19 Every. Single. Day.
7/ The people currently capitalizing on public fear are disgusting.

There are enough *real* reasons to be mad about our national #COVID19 response, like #GETusPPE (yes still a problem). We don't have to create #ConspiracyTheories.
8/ What can we do? What do we do?

We need to #TEST on a massive scale. We cannot understand the pandemic in the #USA without it.

We need BOTH:
1) Diagnostic tests (test for current viral RNA ie the nasal swab)
2) Antibody tests (test for prior exposure to virus in blood)
9/ We need everyone to adopt universal #MASKING when in public to prevent spread of respiratory droplets from sick people who may be asymptomatic.

Masks are in ADDITION to #SocialDistancing measures to minimize potential exposure to sick people.
10/ #TRACE
Extensive #contact tracing by public health workforce. Meaning we IDENTIFY and ALERT people who have been exposed to an infected person (ie a positive test for #SARSCoV2) This enables people who have been exposed to voluntarily self-isolate to further contain spread
11/ I need the public to also understand the multiple layers of moral injury healthcare workers are currently experiencing:

- Hospitals with decreased productivity d/t cancelled elective procedures --> loss of revenue --> layoffs of MDs, APPs, RNs
12/ - Small clinics are similarly being shuttered d/t lack of clinic volume from social distancing. They can't pay their bills or their staff.

- Clinical trials are in disarray and crumbling

- Our chronically ill patients are unable to get the care they need
13/ - Lack of systemic safe childcare options for HCW disproportiantly impacts single parents and dual HCW households.

BIG thanks to the MANY medical and nursing students who have STEPPED UP in this regard. bu.edu/articles/2020/…
14/ - HCW still don't have adequate PPE #GetUsPPE @meganranney

- HCW are also dealing with an overall lack of necessary supplies, medications, and resources to provide appropriate medical care @choo_ek
15/ - There are also the physical and emotional impact of repeated trauma and witnessing of massive amounts of death on these providers @drjessigold

-All the while, HCW are fighting a virus and its sequelae that the world has never seen, that humanity is grappling to understand
16/ So you can be scared. You can be anxious. You can be angry.

These are all expected stages of grief.

There are a lot of things out of our control.

But we can control what we do with our emotions and how they direct our collective actions.
17/ #Science does not have all the answers, that is not the role of science. The role of science is to continue to question, and continue to pose better questions.

We need time to make a safe vaccine, to develop treatments, to fully understand this virus and illness.
18/ I hope the #American public reinvests their trust into some of our historially trusted professions in medicine

I also hope that the binary narrative of public health vs economic health continues to be debunked. These concepts are not mutually exclusive.
