Update: Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther, who had defied orders to keep her business closed during the pandemic, has been released from jail. bit.ly/3drgtYi
2/ Luther was sentenced to seven days in jail, and had been held since Tuesday.

Today the Texas Supreme Court granted a motion to release her. bit.ly/3drgtYi
3/ The court’s order came soon after Gov. Greg Abbott announced he was eliminating jail time for Texans who violate the restrictions.
4/ Abbott today said his order is retroactive to April 2 and supersedes local directives.

But several attorneys said Abbott’s order would not have immediately freed Luther.
5/ That’s because while Abbott barred criminal prosecution based on violation of his executive orders, Luther had been jailed on contempt of court charges.

She had refused to follow state district Judge Eric Moyé’s orders.
6/ Abbott mentioned today that his modifications “may also ensure” that others in similar cases “should not be subject to confinement,” referencing Ana Isabel Castro-Garcia and Brenda Stephanie Mata in Laredo.
7/ Castro-Garcia and Mata allegedly violated the community's emergency management plan by offering beauty and cosmetic services from home.

@lmtnews reported they were released on bond on April 15, the same day they were arrested. bit.ly/35HiAo6
8/8 Castro-Garcia and Mata’s cases had not initially received as much public attention from top state officials as Luther’s.
