THREAD: While I don’t think such an over-simplification is fair, I think a fundamental difference between Team Lockdown and Team Economy has to be discussed.

Note that both groups care about the other to a degree, and they weren’t always separate. 1/
I think most people were okay with lockdown when it started. We saw the pictures from Wuhan and Italy. We needed to do something to buy some time.

The divergence occurred when Team Lockdown shifted the goalposts. 2/
Repeating myself here, but the stated goal of Team Lockdown was to “flatten the curve.” The idea was to slow the spread and buy us time to increase healthcare capacity.

Again, I think everyone understood and was mostly behind this for at least some duration. 3/
I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but Team Lockdown eventually shifted to “lock down until X,” with X being a biological impossibility.

Vaccine? We are years away. Virus gone? Not going to happen. 4/
Adding fuel to this fire was completely arbitrary and quite frankly bullying decisions by governors.

Putting sand in parks. Arresting a dad for playing softball. Closing one store but leaving another open.

Public trust slowly eroded. 5/
My feeling is Team Economy didn’t always feel that way, but it was a backlash to these governors, and to the goalposts shifting.

They were tired and felt misled by their governors and mayors. 6/
But perhaps more importantly, I think Team Economy always knew deep down that human behavior could not completely defeat this virus.

It was always going to spread, infect, and kill people. Remember that the area under the curve was the same no matter what. 7/
Team Economy seemed to internalize this reality, while Team Lockdown did not. They earnestly believed the impossibility that we could defeat this if we stayed home long enough.

That was never the stated goal or reality, and that realization is just settling in for them.
Of course, Team Economy also always realized you couldn’t shut down the Economy for a prolonged period of time.

You simply can’t. There aren’t enough levers to pull in government to avoid that becoming a complete calamity. 9/
Again, Team Economy already knew this, while Team Lockdown was mostly immune from any real economic harm. They were fine. So who cares about the jobs report.

10/
My gut says we will all reach those realities eventually. That we can’t stop this virus and that we can’t lock the economy down forever.

We can, of course, continue to take precautions, test, trace, etc. But we can’t stop biology. We have to do our best and move on. 11/
That doesn’t make Team Economy right or Team Lockdown wrong. It’s just all of us coming to terms with a really bad virus that’s drastically affecting us all.

That sucks, but that’s the reality. /End
