Interesting dialogue in an old TV soap - Buniyaad - set in the 1910s-20s

An Arya Samaji has employed an English teacher for his niece. When the niece employs an English greeting he says

"Maine Haveli ko tumhe Angrezi sikhane rakha hai, Angreziyat nahin"

I found it curious
How many elders in small towns would react that way in our times? Or at any point post independence?

If a youngster were to use western expressions, that would be welcomed as a sign of "tarakki"
In 1920, people still felt their civilization can stand up to that of the Occident.

Learning English was viewed as a tool. Not as a civilizational marker

Today it is fundamentally different
Indian confidence in their own civilization today is likely much lower than what it was say in 1920.

Though likely higher than what it was in 1970 or 1980
Ofcourse the retort might be -

I am reading too much into screenplays written for period pieces

But I am sure these latter day screenplays, if well researched, tell us something about the spirit of the times
