Mother’s Day thread. Last week I tweeted asking how y’all were planning to spend Mother’s Day. I asked because as I’ve mentioned before I lost my mom when she was only 39 (37 in this pic) to colon cancer. Floy Dean Andrews who teenlet is named after Leah Dean = Deardean 🥰
She was from a tiny Marion, Louisiana & brought into this world by midwives, w/no men needed or wanted. She grew up the second of 5 children. All daughters have passed & only my two uncles left to boss me around as uncles are bred to do. She was a serious kid w/strong 4-head 🥰
She aged into her outward beauty & slayed that late 60’s early 70’s “IT” girl. Look at her serving it.
And here. What you doin, mom?!?! Mom: living my best life, son” No Instagram or mobile camera but she didn’t need all that, did she?
Mom had 3 boys by the time she was 19, causing her to drop out of school & place her life on hold. These were happy & dark years as her husband & father of her kids turned into an abusive drug & alcohol addicted monster. Mom left him after he locked her in bathroom & beat her
All night, ignoring her screams & the crying & screaming of her boys. She outlasted him after he passed out & took herself to hospital where we didn’t see her for 3 months. I was too little too abused & too afraid of him to kill him. He couldn’t defeat her - look at this queen:
But that didn’t stop mom. She recovered, divorced, & moved on to what would be her best ten years. She got her diploma, started working, worked her way up to making good money, traveled the world, got a few cool boy/girlfriends. Me to my friends: “stop staring at my mom, dude.”
Mom was never happier though than when she had her baby girl, my little sis who is 7 years younger than I. I went from baby boy to babysitter of my bratty sis who stole mom’s lap & attention. That girl is my best friend now but I wanted to ship her overseas then. Monique the brat
Mom passed lived 18 months after her diagnosis & I spent every day w/her until passing, administering her post chemo drugs all day/night, handling all her affairs & working everyday & tending to my little sis while our older brothers were away in college. I was 19 & sis was 12.
Then one day I could no longer care for her & it was time for hospice. She was there only a couple weeks & when she passed the symmetry of her life was complete: around her were only women/nurses. Women brought her in & women escorted her out. That made me feel better in that
Moment. They left & I just sat with her for a spell just me & her one last time. She slept & her face showed no pain finally. She was small but her hair remained glorious & still smelled of cherry-almond. Leah Dean/Teenlet never met her grandma but as things happen she has some
Of her grandma’s attributes & when they show up I smile inside & think of mom & how we carry our folk w/us even when they leave this life. I have her portrait in my home still & I see her every day. And I miss her everyday. I’ve reached agreement w/my emotions that I’ll forever
Miss her & occasionally welcome the sadness that brings. If you’ve read this far I hope your Mother’s Day is fabulous in the way you need. If you’re a mom, happy Mother’s Day to you. And if you’re like me and have lost your own mom, I send you warm wishes and hope that you
Honor yours in the way you see fit & that’s best for you- party, cry, anger, loss- do you. And to my own mom, happy Mother’s Day again & thanks for serving me love and looks for our 20 years together. 💕
