"In steps"? Doesn't that mean it has an infinite number of subdivisions?
This idea of an infinitely divisible scale with 5 notional divisions was reinforced during last night's speech by a graphic that showed a pointer sliding smoothly up and down between those divisions.
Maybe the Covid Alert Scale needs to come with point releases, like software?

Not only does the UK have the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in Europe (& second highest in the world) but we also clocked up those deaths faster than any other country.

Our coronavirus fire caught later, but burnt brighter and hotter. That translates into missed opportunity.
We could have damped that fire right down while it was still only smouldering. After all, we had the example of all the other countries riding their own pandemic curves ahead of us to draw on. But we're talking about the Tories, who don't do forrin. So we sang Happy Birthday...
And here's a rolling 3-day average of daily confirmed COVID-19 deaths.

Again, we're hugely above other countries.

And yet, our death toll steepened much later than in Italy or Spain, so again we had the perfect opportunity to learn and act. But no, we shook hands with everyone.

Here's the "global comparison of deaths" data from this evening's press conference, with the USA stripped out so that we can properly compare all the rest of the countries. (Underlying data taken directly from the UK Government's spreadsheet.)

And here's the graph they certainly DON'T want you to see.

Uses the identical underlying data, but looks only at the newly reported deaths each day (i.e. the difference between each day's data and the previous day's value.)

Aside from weekends when reporting lags, the UK's top.
And here's the same data, but mapped to the actual dates each country reported its deaths i.e. these curves are no longer shifted based on when the various outbreaks occurred, but show what the real situation was each day.
