36s had a round-top boiler. In the 1950s, majority were rebuilt with all-steel Belpaire boilers and re-designed cabs.

The C36s could reach 100+ mph. They hauled all the fast express trains until displaced by the C38s.

In 1934 to operate the Southern Highlands Express 3633 was painted green, another 28 were also painted green. Back to black during WW2. 1927 Royal Tour of the Duke and Duchess of York, 3602, 3615, 3616 & 3617 were painted Royal Blue.

The Pigs were rated better than the C38s by many engine crew. Last one withdrawn from service in 1969. Top class locomotive, served NSWGR well.
On Saturday 9th March 2013, steam locomotive 3642 operated the Heritage Express "Steam to the Surf" excursion from Sydney Terminal to Wollongong on the south coast.
