Bhaderwah is a town in Doda district of Jammu. Bhaderwah valley is predominantly a mountainous town situated 80 km from Batote.
Bhaderwah also known as “Nagon ki bhoomi” means ‘land of Snakes'. The history is very little known to general masses.

The Bhaderwah Town was known as Hettary Nagar, the ancient Bhadarwah had been a sovereign and prosperous state . Its famous cities were Dugga Nagar and Udha Nagar, which was situated where village Mounda and Sartingal are situated today.
According to Vasuki Puran, when Pandavas perform the Ashumegh Yagna, the “ Samkaran” horse that would graze upon the meadows in the surroundings of holy ‘Sonabain” was taken from Sawan the then king of Bhadarwah.

There was a very Big University here in which there was hostel facility for about 10,000 students. While the Nalanda University had hostel facility for 8000 students. It is said that University campus is at the same area where ancient university of Bhadarwah existed
But the glory of Dugga Nagar and Udha Nagar did not live forever. Both perished under the red hot material of the volcano that erupted on the near by Kailash Mountain,but ruling clan survived.After destruction the then king Bharat established new city and named it as “Bhadarvart”
After some time rulers of Bhadarwah became weak, the rulers of the Bhadu Blawar conquered them &annexed the states of Bhadarwah&Basholi to their kingdom. Afterthat, prince Radhk was given the state of Bhaderwah.This dynasty ruled Bhaderwah upto 16th gen, Pahar Chand as last king
During the Paul Dynasty rule a noble king named Nag Pal impressed Mughal King with his spiritual powers and undaunted courage. It is since then that the farmous Mela Pat is celebrated in Khakhal mohalla of Bhadarwah every year to commemorate that historical event.
