"The Trump administration and governors have not been following their own plans," which required "a little bit of patience," says @ASlavitt. @ScottGottliebMD agrees he expected cases numbers to drop more: "We haven't done that. We're re-opening against that backdrop anyway."
As states re-open, @ASlavitt wishes it were possible to "instantly test" people much more often: "The difference between learning after two days that you got it wrong, and after ten days that you got it wrong, is fairly dramatic."
The two former health officials agree there could be waves of lockdowns over the next year or two: "There's going to be normal, things that do not come back in the same way, and things that we do differently," says @ScottGottliebMD on @MorningEdition.
But @ASlavitt adds that if scientists are allowed to continue their work, treatments may improve and the disease will become less deadly over time, which will make re-opening less perilous. @MorningEdition @NPR
