Um. Did anyone know that the cabinet office has ‘non-exec directors’? 4 new ones, all friends of Cummings: 1) ex commissioner of force that dropped investigation into Vote Leave. 2) Chair of Vote Leave. 3) Digital director of Vote Leave 4) someone else

So to recap, new ‘non-executive director’ of Cabinet Office was chair of organisation found to have committed electoral fraud. And Cabinet Office which last time I checked was part of the Civil Service now has political appointees. Is anyone keeping track of this stuff?

Ok. Here’s my prediction. Cummings will be ceremonially sacked.

But he will carry on working for Gove behind the scenes with even less transparency & less accountability.

There is far bigger more consequential play going on here & Cummings is at the heart of it:
Cummings will go. The people will rejoice. He will no longer be part of the official apparatus of govt. But Gove & Cummings have been a unit for years & the tech solutionism at the heart of this govt - & its response to COVID-19 is Cummings’s pet project

Why does the Cummings story matter? And what does it obscure? The real story is the huge transfer of government assets to private companies that he is overseeing under cover of a pandemic while restructuring the Cabinet Office into his & @michaelgove's private fiefdom

We have no insight into these contracts which did not go to tender but to Cummings's friends & associates. Including a massive transfer of our most private, intimate NHS data. The privatisation of essential state functions is happening in real time in almost complete darkness

Cummings made absolutely clear his conditions for working in govt were smashing civil service & rebuilding in his image & creating British 'ARPA' - an AI-driven research facility. That's exactly what he's doing right now in Cabinet Office with Gove his long-time co-conspirator
