Note: The entire premise of "Obamagate" & any follow-through by Trump, Barr or Durham on the idea directly supports the objectives of the Kremlin & Russian intelligence by further covering up their actions & by enabling future operations by penalizing those who defend the US.
And yeah, folks, I get it...Obamagate is complete bullshit. But that's not my point. My point is that Trump, Barr, McConnell & Co. continue to advance Russian objectives and protect Russian interests and will continue to do so into (and they hope) and through the Nov elections.
Let me put it another way: Thanks to Trump, Barr & McConnell Putin is getting away with it, is successfully attacking and dramatically weakening the U.S. Our leaders are a virus, perverting our system so that it will destroy itself. This is not a drill. It's happening.

I just don't get the sense we have fully grasped the profundity of what is happening all around us. History is being wrenched in a new direction. But we seemed numbed, caught in the news cycle,, trapped by old vocabulary and ways of thinking about the world.
So much will never be the same--but we have yet to have any idea about what from our recent past is permanently gone, what from this new reality will endure and what will filter in that is unexpected but demanded by where we are and where are going.
Our elected and appointed leaders are certainly blind to this, reacting to the consequences of their own deep failings and inadequacies and external forces they have been as unable to comprehend as they were to respond to them with wisdom or compassion or foresight or competence.

The GOP stance that we must tolerate deaths, tens of thousands of deaths, is a manifestation of the grotesque form of economic and social Darwinism that lies at the heart of their worldview.
But we shouldn't underestimate how many people when asked to choose between having a roof over their head or letting others die will choose their own self-interest. The choice seems existential, us or them, & they are grateful their leaders are giving them cover for their views.
This doesn't justify it. Indeed, it's an indictment of the our society's values, of the misguided degree to which we place the individual before the community & of the degree to which too many of us fail to realize that economic recovery can't happen w/o defeating the virus.

I served in the Clinton Administration with what I thought was a great economic team. In retrospect, we contributed greatly to America's inequality and the pro-Wall St., pro-corporate policy prescriptions did huge damage. Many of these folks were on Obama's team, too.
We can and must do better. Nothing will illustrate that more than the economic catastrophe we will live through in the next 18 months. It's time to embrace economists whose metrics are not stock markets and GDP, but the quality of life of average Americans.
@JosephEStiglitz , shunned by Team Rubin, had it right. @RBReich, often ridiculed by that team, had it right. @EWarren and @AOC have it right. We need a new economic approach that is an antidote to the inequality and gutting of social safety nets of the past four decades.
