We understand the Universe around us primarily through light, and 16 May, #InternationalDayOfLight is special for those of us who love astronomy. Are you organising an online event around #IDL2020? Share it with us! @IDLofficial
Our understanding of light itself is closely linked with the history of astronomy, be it spectroscopy, wavebands outside the visible, interferometry, or even relativity. And astronomy owes many of its advances to technological innovations around light detectors in every waveband.

All of us have seen the night sky in 'visible light' with our eyes. The Universe looks very different in different light, from radio to microwave to infrared to ultraviolet to X-rays and gamma rays. Look at our own Sun (warning: false colours) at coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/cosmic_classro… @idl2020
Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, looks so different in each band of light! asd.gsfc.nasa.gov/archive/mwmw/i… - every waveband of light is important for astronomers to understand our Universe, and each band depends on a different set of telescopes, detectors and engineers to make it happen!
