More than 500 Oaklanders have shared feedback on #OaklandSlowStreets, our initiative to create more safer space for physically distant essential trips via walking & rolling. We’re excited to share results to date & a new survey model to support our goals of equity&transparency 1/
This thread will reference our results dashboard, which you can read along with here:

First, we asked demographic questions to understand how our survey represents all Oaklanders. We asked about race, location, physical ability, age, gender, and income, all questions optional. This helps us identify who we’re hearing from vs who we need to work harder to reach. 3/
Perhaps the starkest differences in responses are in geography and race with just a handful of respondents identifying as being from Deep East Oakland, and 68% of respondents identifying as white, while white residents account for only 24% of Oakland’s population. 4/
Most people who responded to the survey do use Oakland Slow Streets for walking, wheelchair rolling, jogging, and/or biking. 5/
And most are in support of the program across the City. 6/
But when we take a closer look at racial data, black respondents are evenly split between support and opposition to Slow Streets. 7/
So we made sure to also ask Oaklanders about their other priority needs from their transportation system during COVID-19 and here’s what we’ve heard so far: 8/
Next up: With data from Alameda County we know that East Oaklanders, black and brown communities, and seniors are suffering most from COVID-19. 9/
We’re working to better reach and serve these groups with phone surveys, meetings with community based organizations and adaptations to our efforts to meet the needs of the most vulnerable during this challenging time. 10/
It is an ongoing priority for the us to find better ways to connect with our underrepresented neighbors. We welcome your help sharing this information in your community, and if you have any suggestions for how we can better communicate in the future we welcome them! 11/
You can find the ongoing survey at oaklandca.gov/projects/oakla…, provide Slow Streets feedback through OAK311, or use the hashtag #OaklandSlowStreets to let us know what you think. /end
