Thrilled to report that we won bond for a client who had been detained at Adelanto for 6 months!

Our client came from Pakistan to visit his brother on a valid travel visa. CBP canceled his visa because they didn't believe his stated reason for coming to the United States.
They held him in a cold sterile waiting room for hours before questioning him and threatening to immediately deport him.

When airport CBP threatened him with deportation back to Pakistan, he expressed how scared he was to go back and was transferred to Adelanto.
By the team our team found out about his case, his hearings had already been pushed back twice bc they couldn’t find an interpreter in his native language of Pothwari. Apparently there is only one in the whole U.S. + he was never given a CFI because of lack of an interpreter.
The bond was set at $10K, which, if you can believe it, is pretty low for Adelanto. We are working with his family to help pay his bond and ensure his release!

Also, I know it looks like we have hella money in our bond fund, but we don’t! Our fundraising platform shows how much money has been raised since we launched the fund-not what’s in there now. At bonds ranging from $5K to $40K - that money goes fast!
Just in case anyone was thinking, “dang, Al Otro Lado you got $99K in that bond fund of yours but can’t cough up the $10K to pay this bond 🤔? What is going on over there??” lol.

HAPPENING NOW: We are at the San Ysidro/TJ POE with @ImmDef where our clients, including 13 children, are being denied the fear interviews that would make them exempt from #MPP aka Remain in Mexico Policy. Our team has been here since 12pm advocating on behalf of these families.
@ImmDef Current #MPP policy states an asylum seeker must prove they face imminent danger in MX via non-refoulement interview (NRI), in order not to be returned to MX. An asylum seeker can request an NRI at any time. CBP is denying clients their right to an NRI and only hope for safety.
These children and families have survived several kidnappings, been assaulted by MX police and held at gunpoint. By the government’s own policy, these families DO NOT belong in MX, and yet CBP is telling us they’ve been instructed not to let anyone. #restoreasylumnow

To truly comprehend just how extraordinarily epic last night’s arrival of the #LAX9 parents was, you need to know what had to happen before this moment could even be dreamed into existence. This was a culmination of grit, hope, love, conviction and faith 2 yrs in the making.
It took a class action lawsuit filed by @aclu to expose the depth of #TrumpAdministration’s lies as it tried to cover up the true cruelty of “zero tolerance,” and a federal court order that found our client’s deportations unlawful to ensure their return. sandiegouniontribune.com/news/courts/st…
It took crucial funding from @togetherrising that allowed us to work alongside @justiceinmotion as they activated their defender network in Central America to locate these deported parents, most of them indigenous, some of them identifiable only by photo.

Our Supreme Court is sentencing people to death. There are no safeguards, no institutions to stop this cruelty. We see others’ pain everyday. It seeps into the fibers of our beings. Over + over we are challenged to even help folks to pursue human fucking decency and dignity.
This is exactly what the Trump administration wants. They want to break the people helping. All 3 of our directors were already put on a gov watchlist, had alerts placed on their passports so they couldn’t come back into MX + do their jobs. WE NEED EVERYONE IN THIS FIGHT.
