Earlier this week, Nicholas Johnson was named Valedictorian of his Princeton University graduating class.

He is the first black valedictorian in the school’s long history.

I held off on posting about it because, TBH, his work is so over my head, I couldn’t do it justice.

I spent my senior year in college pretty focused on $3 pitchers of cheap beer at off-campus bars.

Johnson spent his modeling a community-based preventative health intervention designed to curb the prevalence of obesity in Canada.

Johnson is just dazzlingly impressive.

When I was about four years old, my grandfather cut down one of his old@l golf clubs for me.

Wrapped the shaft in silver duct tape and made a grip for me so I could hit plastic balls around the yard.

When I got a little older, he took me out on a course a few times.

I had no idea what I was doing but he was patient and it was a blast.

We played our last round when he was dying of lung cancer. It was the last time I saw him.

When my family moved out of the city, I decided to learn how to play.

Got a shitty set of clubs at a garage sale. Beat up irons, ancient woods, a cheap vinyl bag.

Adult clubs too big for me but they were clubs.

The Black Pumas’ eponymous first album is just a whole meal.

It’s one of those “just put it on and let it play” albums.

Man, I love this album.
“Colors” is the single and it’s a great song...

Begs for playing with the sound up.

“Black Moon Rising” is another one to just turn up and soak in.

I live in area hard hit by coronavirus. Mask-wearing in stores was mandated over a month ago.

I’m sitting in a parking lot watching people going in and out of a deli. Every single one wearing a mask.

Blue collar dudes driving F-150s, workers, professionals, everyone.

No one is bitching or complaining. It’s just normal now.

There are a lot of knuckleheads in my state... but when people started dropping like flies people largely cut the shit and got religion.

I’ve actually been surprised by the compliance.

Wearing masks is just normal now.
It is going to be an interesting summer.

My state already knows what it’s like to see lots of local obituaries in the paper.

I’d far rather be here than in all of the places where it hasn’t yet hit.

We got religion early. Most will stick to it. Other places are about to learn.
